What does it mean to age in place? Aging in place is a term for when an individual chooses to live and remain in their choice of residence as they age. If you or your parents want to age in place as you get older, you may need to look honestly at your home to see if it can accommodate your future needs.
Aging in Place Trends
As we all do, seniors want to live independently. According to AARP, nearly 90% of adults over the age of 65 want to remain in their current homes as long as possible. For many older adults, maintaining a sense of independence is important to feel secure, happy, and confident. Although most Americans want to stay in their homes, half (48%) have given little to no thought to the home modifications that need to be done to achieve this goal, according to a national poll by the University of Michigan. The poll also found that few homes were outfitted for safe and healthy aging.
How to Age in Place
To prepare your home for long-term living you need to consider changes to your current home design. We have broken down a room-by-room assessment to ensure you can stay at home, thriving for as long as possible. These changes may be as simple as removing area rugs and changing light bulbs. Or as complex as modifying or remodeling your bathroom design with railings and grab bars to provide stability in the shower. You may also consider technology in your plans like cameras and doorbells that allow you to see who is at your door, on your phone, for safety and security.
